Why the interval sets the rhythm, not the cycle length

It takes 52 days to turn a quail egg into a bird ready to sell, and that feels like it should mean a sale every 52 days. It does not. Once several batches are running at different stages, the output cadence matches the input cadence — set every 15 days and you sell every 15 days, indefinitely. The cycle length only decides how long you wait for the first one.

Which is why the first two months of a rotation feel like failure. Nothing is sold, feed is going out, and three batches are growing at once. It comes right on its own the day the first batch reaches selling age, and everything after that arrives on schedule.

The constraint is almost never the incubator

Pipeline length divided by interval is how many batches you are keeping at any moment, and it is rarely the number people picture. A 52-day cycle on a 15-day rotation keeps three and a half batches alive at once. If a hatch is 39 birds, that is well over a hundred birds needing space, feed and water — not 39.

But they are not all in the same place, which is why this splits the two. Birds in a brooder and birds in a grow-out cage are different batches in different boxes at the same moment, and adding the totals together answers a question nobody has. What you need to know is which of the two fills first — and it is usually grow-out, because birds spend longer there and take more room each as they grow.

The incubator is the cheap part and the easiest to fill. If either space check above is red, the honest fixes are a longer interval, an earlier sale age, moving birds out of the brooder sooner, or fewer eggs per setting — not a bigger incubator.

Moving eggs out early is what makes rotation possible

Eggs need still air and high humidity for the last few days, and the incubator needs turning and lower humidity for everything else. Moving the batch to a separate hatcher or the brooder at lockdown is standard practice for that reason — and it has a scheduling side effect worth naming: it frees the incubator days before the chicks arrive, and that gap is what a rotation runs on.

The limit is that you cannot restock sooner than the transfer day. Set again on day 10 when the eggs do not leave until day 15 and two settings share one machine for five days of every cycle, at different temperatures and humidities, which is not a compromise so much as a way to lose both.

Hatch rate is the number that moves most

Everything above scales linearly with hatch rate, and hatch rate is the least predictable figure on the page. Shipped eggs commonly manage 50%, your own fresh eggs from a well-fed breeding flock can beat 80%, and the same incubator will produce both depending on how the eggs were stored before setting. Plan on the low end until you have your own numbers from a few settings.

Method: a batch set on day n moves to the brooder on the transfer day, hatches on the incubation day, and sells at the sale age counted from hatch. Concurrent batches are the days from transfer to sale divided by the restock interval, rounded up. Defaults are typical values; hatch rate and losses vary enough that your own records will beat any figure here.
